Whoville Exhibition H.C. Westerman - See America First

This collection of artwork is part of an exhibition from noted contemporary collector, Beth Rudin DeWoody, curated by Laura Dvorkin in collaboration with Circa 1881Whoville, coincides with EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, and is available through October 23rd.

H.C. Westermann, a seminal figure in postwar American art, is most known as a member of the artist group, the "Monster Roster," named after the “Monsters of Midway”— Chicago Bears. As a sculptor and printmaker, Westermann studied at the SAIC under the G.I. Bill and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during both World War II and the Korean War. Much of his work reflects the realities of war and contemporary life in the U.S. with both humor and criticism. The exhibition includes a selection of works from his celebrated print series See America First, inspired by his encounters on a 1964 cross-country road trip. Westermann was not only a huge influence on the "Hairy Who" artists, but on many other contemporary artists, such as Bruce Nauman who is represented by his 1973 work Justine Time
