Whoville Exhibition Nick Cave - Sound Suit #20

This collection of artwork is part of an exhibition from noted contemporary collector, Beth Rudin DeWoody, curated by Laura Dvorkin in collaboration with Circa 1881Whoville, coincides with EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, and is available through October 23rd.

Chicago-based Nick Cave is an artist, educator and choreographer known for wearable art, working in both the visual and performing arts including sculpture, installation, video, sound and performance. Cave is well known for his Soundsuits, sculptural forms based on the scale of his body and named after the noise they make when worn. Soundsuits camouflage the body, concealing race, gender, and class, and forcing the viewer to look without judgment.

Nick Cave’s 2005 Soundsuit #20 is an early example from his Soundsuit series and the first Soundsuit acquired by the BRD Collection. Exploring a similar sense of materiality. Nick Cave, a director at SAIC, has had a long-time presence in the Chicago art community.
